Programme for Love & Liberty: America’s Musical Journey takes shape

With the casting of our singers completed, Susanna Stranders, Artistic Director of Cameratina, and Gweneth Ann rand, our Principal Guest for 2026 have been putting together our two evenings of wonderful music on 14th and 15th February.

Both evenings draw on pieces by composers working in the United States, while not forgetting that 14th February is St Valentine’s Day.

The first evening is a programme of three short operas:

Kurt Weill’s ‘ballet chanté The Seven Deadly Sins, written so that the lead role is shared by a singer and a dancer – the first time a dancer has joined a Cameratina production;

Samuel Barber’s A Hand of Bridge, at 9 minutes one of the shortest operas ever written; and

Jake Heggie’s At the Statue of Venus.

 Jake Heggie’s opera Dead Man Walking has been a huge critical success for the ENO this Autumn. Luckily for us, he is also a personal friend of Susanna and we are hoping to be able to show during the performance an interview between Jake and Susanna recorded especially for Cameratina. The second evening will be a dramatic narrative of America’s Musical Journey especially created for Cameratina by Gweneth, telling the story of American song through its operas and musicals. [Image of Gwen]

Tickets for Love & Liberty: America’s Musical Journey will be available at operainoborne.org from 15th December.
